Re: Another DAC XP Sig problem

Agreed - it should work. I've used this on a DAC XP (and also AV8s and AV5s) - and you get a digital out, irrespective of whether the input is coax or optical. Have you tried disconnecting the digital input that's not in use (or powering off the equipment the produces it) in case the clock on that i...

Re: DACXP Sig drama

Assuming the fault was not present when they received it (unlikely it would be, as it only seems to happen infrequently), I would expect that they would raise the "Inspection and carriage charge" of £60 and return it.

Re: DACXP Sig drama

When it happens, it's a weird effect on mine. Not only does the bass almost disappear, but the stereo image also does something odd - almost, but not quite, as though it has been mixed into mono - so everything central in the stereo image almost vanishes. Very strange - but as in the other thread, I...

Re: Repairs

Sadly Cyrus have been heading that way for years. When I bought my first unit (an MR2, oddly) they were very helpful, serviced it (out of warranty) for under £50 and sold me parts because I like messing around (e.g. I once converted a III integrated into a Power for a while, using some parts that th...

Re: DacXP Signature Problem

Hi, yes I've had a few problems with the DAC XP Sig. In my case the bass completely disappeared. My DACXP (not a Sig) does that too! Done it twice now, and the only way to make it work properly is to power it off and on again. I'm struggling to think ~how~ a DAC can suddenly lose all bass - it's a ...

Re: smooth black

I've seen both in smooth black, but IIRC it's a more complex picture, in that I'm fairly sure that for a while after crinkly black was bought in, you could order in smooth black at no extra cost. And then things were further confused by those such as this forum's AV8, who regularly swapped boxes so ...

Re: Cyrus AV5 Cinema Preamp Input Selection issues

I guess it's possible that it had been stored somewhere damp and got surface corrosion on the contacts in the DIL socket - if so then removing and replacing would certainly wipe away any minor oxidisation. What individual gain level do you have the two front channels set to? The AV5 is fairly sensit...

I would think it will sell well on Ebay? Must be a few owners who have slipped up and snagged one of theirs, I would think...

Incidentally it would be worth saying whether Mk1 or 2, as they are completely different!

Re: Cyrus AV5 Cinema Preamp Input Selection issues

By all means open it up and see if there is anything obviously, visibly wrong, but in general modern electronics works at very low power level, so it's rare to see burned out or otherwise obviously failed components. The occasional exception are the SMD electrolytic capacitors, which have been known...

Op-amp swap post on PFM

I know there are a few PFM members here - would someone with posting privileges in the PFM Classified section be willing to post a swapsies for me? I know, I could do what other people do and post 50 inane pointless posts saying "Looks great, GLWTS" to loads of other people's for sale thre...

Re: Repairer needed Swansea

Without knowing exactly what items he has it's difficult to say, but offhand I can't think of any situation where the connection between the two would cause the transport not to power up, so it's either going to be the mains power outlet, the mains lead or something in the transport itself. If he ha...

Re: Cyrus 1 or 3

The older Cyrus amps seem to keep their value well, and I suspect the main reason is the fact that they have a decent quality phono section built in. It never ceases to amaze me how much broken ones sell for on Ebay!

Re: BelCanto CD2- SQ tweak

Of course, yes, the way in which the less-reflective parts are created is different, but I thought you were implying that the way in which the data is formatted is different. If so, you would be right, in that commercially-made CDs sometimes stretch/break the boundaries of the standards in their eff...

In what way?

(other than the fact that CD-R's have lower reflectivity)

Re: BelCanto CD2- SQ tweak

Surely that should be easy to test, though? Just get a WAV file, burn it to CD, rip it from CD, bit-for-bit compare the two. I've done tests of that type in the past, and have always been surprised at how robust and error free the process is (or at least was in the case of the very ordinary kit that...
