Re: Roon for beginners

One of the most useful contributions ever made to Cyrus Unofficial was 8 years ago when Simon posted "MacMini as a Digital Media Hub Guide" Is there any change that someone out there could write a beginners guide to Roon. That would be really useful. Wow thank you John :) I dont have the ...

Re: Roon Musings

I unboxed the NUC when I got home from work. I'd already downloaded the required software: The latest NUC BIOS Etcher USB utility Roon Core Then I had to: - Install the M2 SSD and 8GB memory (2 x 4GB modules), connect power, connect network cable, keyboard and HDMI cables so the NUC booted and disp...

Re: Roon Musings

Simon, Rune, thank you. I feel comfortable in going the i5 route now. 90% of the time I will be steaming to one zone, with a possibility of two 10% of the time. The second zone is just a Sonos system so no processing going on there. The only possibility of up-sampling would be if I change my main s...

Re: Roon Musings

OK, stupid me! I've been digging a little more into the Roon options and can see the higher spec CPU/memory isn't just for DSD number crunching as I'd thought. Its also required for sound EQ (if you care to use it), room correction features, and several others that require a bit of processing grunt...

Re: Chord M scaler coming for DAC’s

At the risk of this thread degenerating into a bitter slanging match so this will be my final post on the matter, the mathematics behind the M Scaler is absolute, whether the practical implementation lives up to theory remains to be seen. Common sense supports your statement Simon but in a defined ...

Re: Chord M scaler coming for DAC’s

Over the years this up scaling topic has been discussed many times

You can’t put back into the music file what’s missing period

Don’t get caught up on this revamped hype!

What matters is the mastering to determine the quality and the source it is originally taken from to become a digital file

Re: Roon Musings

Did you change to a NUC? My DeskMini still runs ROCK without any issues. Yes I did as after an update mine failed even a complete reinstall did not fix it Sorry to hear that, is was after all my recommendation. But mine has been rock solid. At the moment I am playing with upsampling to DSD512 to an...

Re: Roon Musings

If network infrastructure in the house allows it I would recommend just putting the Roon Core next to the Router especially if it is in another room then it is not nessesary to spend a fortune on a silent NUC or PC and then using a RPI as a bridge connected to the DAC. The plan is a standard NUC in...

Re: Roon Musings

Agree with your feedback. Pi not finished as the amazing summer has paused that! Cost is less than £100 so far and expecting the sound to be great BUT I will be using the I2S output first in my DDDAC so no USB conversion etc so expecting the best you can get from the Pi especially when I build the l...

Re: Roon Musings

The fan is on most of the time even when just doing nothing I have not altered the BIOS as not a problem for me as in the office and want it to run cool. The NUC is so small it’s not surprising the fan is always on. I feel you will notice the fan I have to say. Of course the ROON silent option is gr...
