tagging, computers - shouting

Postby callen24 » Fri Jan 11, 2019 1:05 pm

A number of vinyl i’ve bought come with a WAV download, which is not very well tagged.
the number has increased recently.
As a complete beginner I sat at the computer for two hours hunting them down.
Quite frustrating because my 24/96 file of peter gabriel 3 did have the right tags
i even understood why my ok computer tracks were in the wrong order, and changed the numbers.
And then having finished a few techy hours i ended up shouting.
i had edited tags on my back up drive, not the NAS that my stream x reads from,
i’ve never really liked computers

Hi Chris, WVs don’t tag well at all which is why all my music is converted to FLAC.

AFAIK you can tag metadata into WAV but there are limitations and not all software will see it. I always convert to FLAC.
Once you find the right software, you should find it much easier. MP3tag is popular with Windows users as I recall. I have a Mac so I batch convert the files to FLAC in an app called Fission then alter the metadata in Metadatics. Most software like this will have an option to search an online database to find the metadata. Some tweaking is often required and I find the cover art using a Google image search. I'd still rather do all of this than settle for mp3.

fyi quote:
"It's not actually true that metadata storage inside WAV files is a new thing; as a container format, tagging has been built in from the start in the form of RIFF tags. However, said tags do not allow as rich a range of metadata as tagging schemes in other file formats. Furthermore, reading RIFF tags would be yet-another piece of code that music software programmers have to write and maintain. Meanwhile, other formats use shared tagging schemes, such as ID3, or Vorbis Comments. The result is that WAV library management has always been more difficult compared to other formats.

This has changed fairly recently. WAVs are now being more commonly tagged with ID3 tags, and more and more music software are supporting this".

you could try songkong http://www.jthink.net/songkong/en/index.jsp

Its user interface is a bit clunky and it takes a while to get the hang of but it does the job.

When you have reencoded and tagged all your flac files, how will you play them? Often library and/or playback software will automatically tag your files for you.

I got Tag & Rename years ago as it was cited as the on,y software to effectively tag WAV. Not sure if this is still true, but I still use it and find it very good.

A vote for mp3tag on Windows. I tag all my FLAC files that way. Of course you could use the sledgehammer approach and get Roon, it will do everything for you.
[(NAS > LAN network) + (oppo 203 > ml binary star i/c) + (RoonCore on Intel NUC > LAN network)] > primare pre60 > tellurium q black xlr > primare a60 > tellurium q black 2.0 > boenicke w13 se

I think I would rather spend £500 on my system than some tagging software. :)
