24 bit Streaming Help

Postby madaboutlawns » Mon Jul 02, 2018 8:58 pm

So I have a stream x2 signature.
How do I get it to play 24bit audio, I still haven't heard any.

I've got a full tidal subscription and the latest firmware for streamer.

I understand that tidal masters only works with desktop pc.
If this is true, how do I get the music from the pc to the streamer, is it only possible with a usb cable?

Then there's qobuz, is this the same or will it play directly using cadence?
And then, do I have to buy 24bit files and store them on some kind of hard drive?

And then, do I have to link the hard drive to the streamer with a usb cable?

Any help will be appreciated, thanks

Tidal Masters requires an MQA compatible DAC to fully “unfold” the files but it’s all *ll*cks anyway so don’t worry about that. Quobuz Sublime will give you access to high res but it’s very expensive. Your best option is to get a NAS, rip your CDs to it and download a few high res albums and build your digital collection that way.

Thanks Joe for your help,

I have an old NAS drive I'm no longer using.
Do I connect it through the internet hub, WIFI / Ethernet?
And by cheaper you mean once I've bought the albums, I own them for life?
Who do I buy the albums from, or where the best place?

And *ll*cks I take it you feel there's not much in difference between 16bit and 24bit

If you search the forum there are a huge amount of threads on this topic

Bottom line 16 bit is amazing and 24 normally adds nothing and all depends where the 24 stuff was mastered from

Seriously don’t sweat it and many benefits elsewhere like you have find with clean power !

From what I can tell, it's not worth the effort to try and make everything 24 bit.

I'll get round to it when I've got some spare time.

I'll probably set up the nas drive and buy one or two albums and see how it sounds.

Thanks guys

Just started to set up a nas drive, then I checked the price of 24 bit albums.

Most are from £10 to £30, not sure I fancy dropping a ton again on replacing all the albums.

24 bit streaming might be the way forward.

I don't think you say whether you already have a CD collection.
If so, then as suggested, it's really not worth paying out money for 24 bit, if you can rip the 16 bit CD's.

To my ears, 24 bit recordings are very slightly better, but even so all my music files are ripped off my original CD's rather than buying downloads.

No, I don't have a cd collection any more.
I stopped collecting them in the 90's

I bought some a few years ago, but it's strange how cd's tend to disappear over time.
It must be whilst moving them from car to car and then back to the house, over time they just get lost.

High res music isn't necessarily better, it is often a marketing gimmick. It all comes down to the mastering. There are numerous examples of new 192KHz 24 bit remasters that don't sound as good as a 44.1KHz 16 bit rip of the original CD from the 80's. This is generally down to the current trend for dynamic range compression, google "the loudness wars".

If you're looking for the best version of an old album that has had numerous remasters, a search of the Steve Hoffman forums is worthwhile. Of course, anything recorded on analogue tape will sound best on vinyl, and if you're buying a reissue for that, make sure you do your homework as it could well be from a digital source anyway!

Basically, it's a minefield.

High res is most impressive for classical and audiophile music as it's mastered appropriately. You'll find some stunning sample tracks on websites like HD Tracks, but don't expect high res to elevate your average contemporary release.

I think you've summed it up perfectly.
There's a mixture of things to consider.
The original mastering, the format capabilities.
I've only just started getting into vinyl again.
I've been collecting loads of great albums on vinyl, I've been looking at cat numbers on vinyl to find out what edition it is.
I've also started checking the condition of used stuff, out of everything I'm really enjoying old vinyl.

I got stung in one record shop, I should have know it was too good to be true.
The shop had loads of stock and in almost every crate was a great album that I'd been looking for.
Stuff like dark side of the moon, R.E.M. Automatic for the people, Coldplay Yellow, Nirvana.
The shop only had the sleeves out and kept the records behind the counter. I bought 2 albums and when I got home I noticed that the disc was coloured, I thought nothing of it until the next album had a coloured disc as well, then the penny dropped, they were fakes.
They sounded terrible.

I'd like to listen to 24bit just so I know what it sounds like, but for now I'll be sticking with vinyl.

Thanks for your help, it's put me in the right direction.
