Preamp Recommendations

Re: For Sale Bel Canto DAC3VB and Bel Canto Pre3VB

Postby angelface » Mon Jan 01, 2018 11:34 am
Over Christmas visited my friend Steve(a member here incidently) who has recently purchased a pair of Mono X to add to his CDi and 8vs2 with Totem Arro speakers.

Just for fun I connected his CDi to the DAC3VB with LNS power supply and bypassed the 8vs2.

So excellent DAC in CDi replaced by Bel Canto DAC that is older.
Mediocre pre in 8vs2 replaced by digital pre in Bel Canto DAC.

So was it better? Light and day better! We listened to Gregory Porter, Diana Krall and the XX (not my choice of music except the last one!). The music really opened up and was so much clearer than when we returned to the 8vs2.

So this unexpected test by angelface has got me thinking about replacing my Cyrus 8vs (currently used as a pre) for a dedicated pre. Currently my long-term ambition is to replace the 8vs with a dacxp signature but there might be a relatively inexpensive interim move that I could make to better the 8vs in the short-term. Although I enjoyed the Bel Canto (and this option is still available as angelface has not yet sold his DAC3VB) I suspect the DAC in the CDi is adequate for now and a dedicated pre would be a better way forward.

Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated (btw I mostly listen to jazz, some rock but not classical).
Steve

I advised him that if the improvement was due to a better pre-amp, it would be better to try a better pre-amp before improving on DAC.

I changed from Cyrus 8, which I used as dac/pre to dac xp+ long time ago, it’s a no-brainer.
DAC xp sig will be even better.

swifty , the bel canto pre 3 is exceedingly good at that price . it has home theatre bypass which many amps don`t have . it has one of the best remotes [if its the standard one used for all components ] and has rock solid build

i have my bc stuff for a number of years now

it's the dac3 that is still for sale, and was tried as a preamp, not the pre

Yes the pre-amp was bought before Christmas by someone with a Belcanto system also in France. It was DAC that we connected to swifty's system.
