Spotify - cheapest way to hear through my system

Postby angelface » Thu Apr 19, 2018 12:06 pm

OK I am not into streaming but I listen to new music (well naughties rock) using Spotify on my wife's computer. I have a small sub and a couple of postcard sized flat panel speakers but it is my third system.

If I was going to play through it my hifi I would need what?

I have downloaded Spotify on to my chromebook and then works fine so all I need is a USB cable to my DAC right?

Of course my very nice DAC doesn't have USB inputs so I need an asyncrous USB/SPDIF converter such as BC RefLink?

Will this all work?

I don't want to take out a subscription (sorry Tidal/Qubuz)!

external (or internal if you prefer providing it has a digital output) sound card for the computer, spdif cable into your DAC.
That's what I use to browse Amazon Music..

Something like a Creative SoundBlaster X-fi HD?

Dell Chromebook only has 2USB and one HDMI connections.

Yes - I use an SBE5 - input from the PC (or laptop in my case) is by USB.
Output from the SBE5 is optical cable into my DACXP+

You need the Creative Software Suite (free) loaded on the PC and for best performance I use SPDIF-out direct setting so the DAC does all the hard work.

mmm i am not an expert but my son just plays his android phone from the headphone socket via a 3.5mm jack into 2 rca into either the amp or it would go into the analogue inputs on your dac to play spotify

pretty good sound

Just a quick note re: Android.

I can attach my SBE sound card to my Samsung Android tablet USB socket, load up the Creative app on the Samsung, then use optical cable to connect the sound card to the DAC as before.

Only difference is that there's no 'SPDIF-direct' option so in theory the sound not quite so good.

pretty good sound

This socket also allows an optical output using a mini jack - same as an airport express.

My vote is for something that supports spotify connect and digital out.
Second hand bluesound node. There is probably other and cheaper alternatives but this was the first that comes to mind.

or the DIY approach a RPI with Digi+ hat. and installing librespot.

If it's any help I've used the Chromecast Audio via toslink in to my 8 XPd Qx. Controlled by android. Works a treat!
