Headphone setup

Postby Starwarsmike2422 » Tue Oct 30, 2018 9:43 am

Hi everyone. Looking for a bit of advice.....

I’m looking to add a decent set of headphones to my setup. Question? My amplifier doesn’t have a dedicated headphone connection but it does have RCA outputs. Can I simply connect headphones to the RCA outputs?, if not, does this mean I need a dedicated Headphone amp? If so, would welcome any recommendations for a headphone amplifier? Under £1000.

Also recommendations on headphones also under £1000. More than happy with ex-demo or used sets.

Thanks in advance

I'm not 100% certain but I think connection via RCA's not possible (surely there would be no vol control...). For an amp have a look at Fidelity Audio 200SE, £800 & highly recommended. I bought Senn HD 800S headphones 3 months ago & love them. RRP £1399 new but can be found at under £1000 (new) or c£850 ex dem.

See if you can find a second hand Auralic Taurus Mk II. Wonderful headphone amp, particularly with my favourites, the Audeze LCD series. They're a little on the heavy side for extensive listening but sound incredible. I'm a big fan of planar magnetic headphones. Hifiman are also great.

Totally agree re Audeze. They do make a suspension band which can be bought separately which goes a long way to mitigate the weight issue.

As for headphone amps, where to start? There are too many to contemplate, see what you can try easily from your location and go from there. Personally I would probably try to find a used/ex demo Chord Hugo version 1, can’t really go wrong with that.

I agree with the suggestion reference Chord Hugo version 1. I have one which is superb with both my Shure SE353 IEMs and my Sennheiser HD800s. In fact, as I almost never use mine now, we could probably do a deal. If you're interested, drop me a PM.

Don't connect headphones to anything that is not 3.5 or 6mm jack!

If you want to listen to vinyl, you need a headphone amp with analogue input so I don't think that works for Hugo?

No contest. Buy avShiit (yes honestly). Excellent headphone amps and very reasonable cost. Direct only. Google them
