Speaker Isolation - pretty amazing results..

Postby jules » Tue Mar 26, 2019 11:52 am

Something I've been meaning to do for a while - the Leema Xone's have spikes and due to wooden floors I've always used metal spike shoes. All well and good however moving the speakers is a pain since you need 3 pairs of hands to get each shoe exactly under the spike. But hey, no big deal.

Anyway things were brought to a head recently when a family member knocked a rolled up rug over (don't ask!), this hit a speaker, speaker toppled over, another family member tried to save speaker not realising the mechanics of the situation and promptly got a spike in the hand... not good.

Moorgates sorted me out with some rubberised replacement feet at a good price - they look very much like the yellow/white hemispheres in the middle right of this photo:

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/OioAAOSwQf9bfwCo/s-l1600.jpg

Spikes out, rubber feet in. Repositioned/levelled up speakers a bit. Uh oh I thought.. the speakers weren't now rock solid to touch but had a small amount of 'wobble' when pushed. Anyway can't have another injury so I'll have to live with the outcome...

BIG DIFFERENCE. I'd been listening to some piano music, Dubussy Preludes (Paul Jacobs on CD) all sounding good but crikey the amount of detail was amazing, reverb of the recording location was very obvious now. Switched to an old favourite JM Jarre's Equinox... during the intro to part 5 (the rain bit) there are some foot steps on the right channel that I'd only heard on headphones before but now I could hear them through the Xones...

Switched to Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads and I swear it sounded like the recording had been speeded up by 10%!! That's when timing improves.

Over to the Lemon Song by Led Zep... for me one of the ultimate tests for bass reproduction and it has never sounded better. All the inflections in Joney's bass laid bare.

So something that was a convenience upgrade has been a big sound boost to my system.

In summary the big plus points are detail retrieval (especially low level bass) and timing. Frequency response seemed the same to me so no downsides I could hear, all good.

Hopefully this is better, think they are B&W feet...

At the risk of starting another speaker feet war, my view of the issue is simple:

wooden floor = decouple
concrete floor = spike

That's worked for me for many years.

Can't argue with that. Shame I didn't find out about it earlier ;)

I installed Soundcare Superspikes under the Spendor A5 floorstanders in my lounge. It meant I no longer needed to worry the about spikes which had previously stood on granite chopping boards! I find they have opened up the sound somewhat. The cost was pretty cheap all things considered.

Isoacoustics pucks on granite slabs on wood laminate floor but not sure of construction underneath.

Great improvement over original spikes. Exactly as OP described

do you have your speakers just on 2 pucks?
isn’t that easy to topple them over?
the gaia screw into the threads for spikes, and come with different thread sizes to suit most. the different models are about the weight they are designed for.
i would have got them a year ago but advice from dealer was that speakers with seperate outriggers nullify their benefit. ie VA BBG like mine
