Stereo Imaging, A technical Description

Postby RichardLowe » Fri Jul 06, 2018 10:53 am

Necessarily technical in places, but a very interesting article on Stereophile regarding stereo imaging. The technical information can be skimmed to a degree and you can still get the gist of it - https://www.stereophile.com/content/stereo-image.

Basically all stereo imaging is a compromise and involves tricks to fool the listener!

When at University, I attended a very convincing demo - we were taken into a darkened room, equipment behind a curtain, played several different sounds, and told to record whether the sound was from left, right, or centre of the room.

We all pretty much agreed on the answers, but when the curtain was raised, it revealed that there was in fact only one speaker.

It's all an illusion ....

In simple terms is it not simply two sounds arriving to each ear at the exact same time, the brain is then interpreting as one sound? I’ll now have a read which sure will prove me wrong.
