Inexpensive DACs from the far east.

Postby Ianmac » Sat Apr 06, 2019 7:08 pm

System changes recently forced me to look at replacing a DAC in my office system. Initially I looked at another Benchmark DAC as I used two already.
The Benchmark DAC 1 is a good DAC but getting a bit long in the tooth so I was wary about paying too much for 10 yr old electronics.
I have been looking extensively at options and came across two that seemed to fit the bill

The Topping D50 and Topping DX7s. The 50 is a bare dac (needing a 5v PSU or USB supply) with the DX7 complete with inbuilt PSU and Balanced out.
I found a site where someone takes the trouble to measure the performance of DACs and both these were listed. I was impressed to note that from the measurements made both of these came close to the Bencmark DAC 2 and outperformed the DAC 1

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/foru ... -dac.2403/

I have decided to try a D50 and bought one via Amazon (returnable if i dont like it? ) the Digital portion of the D50 and DX7 look to be almost identical .
The D50 was £179, the DX7s is around £370 with remote.
I will use the D50 with an external Linear 5v supply and use the unbalanced outputs into a modded Cyrus pre amp I have. The Pre output will feed a power amp, a Smartpower or equivalent if I can find a clean one outwith ebay.

Anyone already gone down this route with DACs from the far east.?

Ill report back my findings in a few weeks.

The Topping D50 I ordered has arrived.
I have it up and running using a 5v regulated linear supply.
Early days, but after 12 hrs running I have to admit Im gobsmacked at the performance. I cannot distinguish any difference between the SQ of the Topping D50 and my Benchmark DAC1 HDR via Cyrus Smartpower and KEF ref 1.2. using CD 16/44 and my Renderer for 24/96 files from Linn.
I have to do further tests with the Topping versus my Benchmark DAC2 via my N Cores into ATC SCm 40's.
The D50 costs £179 in the Uk via Amazon. Very well built, looks like a CNC milled case, quite heavy for its size ( 110*110 *25mm)--opening it invalidates the Warranty !!! One issue with the data sheet but I have to check online before I comment further
Will report progress.

I built my own power supply but low noise Linear supplies are on ebay from about £45- 60.
The unit comes with a USB to Concentric power plug so one can supply it with power from a USB connector.
As Ive mentioned, I have further tests to do so Ill organise a test with it fed directly from a PC and let you know the results.

Still running sweet.
