Unhappy return to vinyl

Postby johnandvirginia » Wed Jun 28, 2017 11:06 am

Always regretted selling my Manticore Mantra some years ago. The good news was that I did not sell my vinyl. I thought I would dip my toes into record playing again so have bought a relatively cheap deck - an Audio-Technica AT-LP3 with built-in phono amp. The results so far are really poor! The sound is really muffled
and the bass is really exaggerated. I have tried connecting the turntable to my Bel Canto pre-amp and through my Sonos Connect but it sounds awful whichever I choose. Any ideas apart from shooting myself?!!

good though the LP3 is I think you have gone in too low.
if you can't take it back, or consider selling it on I suspect a cheap 2nd hand phono stage and better cartridge will improve the sound a lot, but maybe not enough for your ears.
Maybe a cuer can lend you a spare phono stage to see how much difference it makes?
what cartridge does it have?
Vinyl is great but it seems you have to spend quite a lot of money to get to the standard we are used to through streamers

did you look at this fettled LP5 as an alternative?
http://www.theaudiofiles.co.uk/turntables.html
maybe contact them to see if they can help, they may take your LP3

i had a project debut with inbuilt phono amp with orfton 2m red, sold it for £150, so bargains around. i suspect it's internal phono stage was much better than the audio technica

Take it back if you can - as Chris says you've gone in too low.

If you have a budget in mind that you're comfortable with it should be possible to spec you something competitive sound wise.

Many thanks for replies, gents. Bought from John Lewis - so going back tomorrow - no problems. Will spend a bit more time researching a better deck and phono stage. Thanks again. John.

Recommendations for a turntable which would suit my system with a budget of around £500 not including a phono stage would be most welcome.

New or would you consider well looked after second hand items?

Every other item is pre-owned so, yes, I'd be happy to go that way.

Shame this has already gone, would have been ideal.

Oh and whatever you do, don't listen to anyone who suggests an LP12 :)

Second hand, a rega rp3 or p3 should come in your budget (possibly even an rp6 if you are lucky).

I' ve owned a few rega models over the years & have always found them fabulous decks with sound quality that far exceeds their price tag !

Lots of choice in your price range and if you're patient and lucky you could snag a cheap Garrard 401, Thorens 125 or Technics 1210 etc. I really like the Clearaudio Concept TT, but having just spotted it I think you should contact Kipper immediately and do a deal on this lovely TT he has -

Took your advice and contacted Kipper. I am now awaiting delivery of a Rega P3 + exact and a Lehmann Black Cube phono stage. Will post my reactions as soon as all set up. Thanks again to all for your advice. John.
