Laying on my sofa, in my apartment, in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

35 more days and I'm back to the real world-can't wait!

Not amazing, unfortunately. Working here. Will finish 31 August - my decision not to stay. Just had 5 newbies turn up, looks like they will all be out within another 6 months. This is real Africa. Its tough. Poverty that you can't imagine, we have to feed and clothe the Mauritanians at work to make sure they have food at least once a day, and shoes. Food is tough, no refrigeration, hygiene is a real issue. I've been almost constantly sick for the past few months. Malaria season is just round the corner.

I did get drunk at the Kuwaiti Ambassadors house with the Saudi first officer and a Moroccan belly dancer though! Drinks the first Thursday of every month at the American Embassy!

No one knows anything about Mauritania. Interestingly it's only 40 mins or so from the Canary Islands, and even closer to Cabo Verde.

Theres a kind of running joke here for foreign women who marry Mauritanians. They get off the plane in Nouakchott only to look confused, and say " But............ this isn't Mauritius!" Really, no one knows where Mauritania is or anything about it.

Yeah - cycling. It was really good. Made even better by a tail wind on the way home.

... and a couple of PBs as a result

no refrigeration sounds really tough , no way that generators can power one ? I am amazed at your tenacity in working there . puts me to shame . some years ago my wife and I trained in many places including language school , how to kill food to eat in dessert places etc and dentistry and hairdressing as nothing out in Pakistani dessert . but sadly I came to nothing due to the violence out there and disagreement with sending agency .

Generators solve the issue of power supply, which is an issue. They don't solve the issue of refrigeration, as this simply doesn't exist in places like slaughter houses and butchers. Meat is put in what looks like a refrigerated unit, touch it and its hot, and the meat is covered in flies and drying up. Even if a freezer or refrigeration unit does exist, you have no idea of how many times the contents have been thawed and re frozen.

The root issue is money. There just isn't any.
