What vinyl did you spin recently?

Postby borris » Thu Feb 27, 2014 10:36 pm

I know, another what did you...? ::)

...and introduced by he who bemoaned the Electronica thread!!!
But, after this evenings proceedings at the borris abode, I feel there is a need for vinyl lovers to share their experiences...

This evening I listened to;

Groundhogs - "Split", 1971 first pressing. I have always loved this album, but this evening I couldn't help noticing how fantastic the production was on this recording. It was like listening to a really well remastered reissue (sic!). Apart from the obvious lead guitar, the bass at times was quite stunning, full of that rich 1/2 inch gauge (lol), finger splitting, thwong as opposed to the usual thwang:P  . Just how I remembered that early 70's (blues/rock) bass! The tingling cymbals without any trace of slush, and hardly any detectable sibilance in the vocals. Can't, for the life of me, remember this vinyl album sounding this good, but then I have upgraded my pre and p/amps! Also, I've added a cork mat to my tt. Could that be the reason?!! If you love your 70's blues/rock this album is essential to your vinyl collection!

John Coltrane - "A Love Supreme", heavy duty vinyl, but not sure/can't remember if it is 180gm!
No indication on cover or label. It is a reissue on the American Impulse record label.
Yep, again I am intrigued as to how lovely this, already a favourite, sounds. Would have recommended this reissue at any rate, but would doubly endorse that sentiment after this evening!

Gonna play an all time fave, SRV - "Couldn't Stand The Weather", 180gm, next!

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

From the 2008 box set 1970-1975 on 180gm vinyl.

I haven't listened to this all the way through for many years. It's much better than many would remember and the version I have is extremely good.

Now you've gone and done it!  :o

I remember my parents buying me this for Christmas, knowing I loved Genesis.
I played it to death and think I may be on my third vinyl copy now!
Oddly, my friends at the time didn't go much on it, for varying reasons.
I soon rectified that!
So now it would seem I will have to try and source the box set!  8)
Could the same be said of the other albums in the set?

For testing of new amplifier (and how I ended up with new phono stage), I kept playing TOTO - Turn Back.
this is one of the best recordings I've ever come across to show how dynamic a recording can be. Most played test track was English Eyes.

This is a pressing from the 80's, and has survived at my parents' weekend house for last 20+ years

Rega RP3 with TTPSU + Musical Fidelity M1LPS -> Musical Fidelity M6i -> Trond "Ellam 2.5"

To be honest I've had the box set for ages but have never played the albums. I picked it up many moons ago for a price I couldn't resist. Saturday felt like a "Lamb" day to me, so out it came. I'll try to find time to play the others over the next couple of weeks.

"BB King In London", bought the week end for £4, bargain as vinyl is clean as! Plays beautifully, loving BB at the mo and this album sounds lovely considering it's age!

Harvey Andrews - "Writer Of Songs", was introduced to this album via an Irish nurse years ago. Hated it, but for Soldier. Now of course, I appreciate Andrew's writing! This is a star power release from the 70's and although the vinyl looked clean, it's as rough as! Shame, cos under all the surface noise it is quite a well produced album.

John Martyn - "Solid Air", 2013 release, not 180gm alas, but lovely all the same.

Human League 'Dare'.

Vinyl and Electronica are not mutually exclusive.  Boards of Canada is going on next!

The Limiñanas - Costa Blanca

An album I'd not got around to ordering, despite having meant to for months, but chanced upon yesterday at our local independent record shop.

Just streamed this off Qobuz for a laugh- the recording might be great on vinyl but OMG streamed is totally mental - quiet then, suddenly, ridiculously LOUD - had to turn it off!

I suspect the next album on your turntable will be Paul Young's No Parlez!

Oh, and I cannot stand Simply Red.
