John Martyn - One World

One of the most musically beautiful and best sounding and albums I own.

T.Rex - Electric Warrior (1971 copy owned from new)

One of the joys of retirement: spent a rainy Friday cleaning vinyl on my Project RCM. I'm going through my collection of around 400 albums in reverse alphabetical order and have got as far as T. Time to check out my handiwork.

The 2012 Warner Bros US pressing of RHCP Californication. Way more listenable than the infamous CD.

Still record cleaning in reverse alphabetical order and have now got to Q.

Playing Quiver (eponymous first album) from 1971.

This is sort of folky / country rock with high profile bass guitar lines. The band had commercial success following a merger with The Sutherland Brothers a couple of years later. I think the lack of a strong vocalist probably didn't help the original format attract a larger following, although personally I much prefer this earlier style. My favourite tracks are the slightly prog rock Cool Evening and the acoustic guitar played Just Loving You, both on side 2.

Now up to M with my record cleaning.

Mahogany Rush - Mahogany Rush IV

I have the first 3 Mohogany Rush albums on a CD mini box set and the next 6 on vinyl.

Clearly I have a liking for these Jimi Hendrix sound alike Canadians.

Have now got as far as B with record cleaning in reverse alphabetical order. Am today playing a newly cleaned:

Budgie - Squawk

In my opinion the best period of Budgie is 1971-1975 which covers the first five albums of which this is the second (1972). A classic mix of power riff heavy tracks balanced with acoustic ballads. The stand out track is Young Is A World on side 2 which contains both styles in the same song.

I have been so busy with record cleaning that I've finished! Over the last 6 weeks I've cleaned 502 discs which includes single & double albums and a few box sets.

Am celebrating by playing:

Audience - Lunch

Released in 1972 this is the fourth and final album of this progy / jazzy / folky band. It's a collection of perky ditties, but is bettered by the preceeding third album The House On The Hill which is outstanding in my opinion.

Well done John, labour of love.

It would be interesting if you do find a record or two that hasn't cleaned well enough to bring it round here when you and Chris come and see if my ultrasonic cleaner shows any difference.

Chris, you too, be interesting.

A labour of love indeed.

Thanks for the offer to use your ultrasonic cleaner Mick. I have some LPs which did not appear fully cleaned despite my best efforts. I'll give one or two a listen and bring round for some enhanced attention if the sound is not improved.

An electronic vertical tracking force arrived in the post today and so I spent a while checking and adjusting and it's now bang in the middle of the lower and higher range at 2.3g.

Also in the post came the newly available double album:

Wishbone Ash - Live At The Glasgow Apollo 77

I'm pleased to note these are flat heavy guide discs which sound great. However, it's a great pity this recording was not included in the recent Wishbone Ash Vintage Years 1970-1991.

I saw Martin Turner and band playing at Hertford Corn Exchange last Sunday. This tour features the album New England in full followed by a selection of Wishbone Ash tracks from across the MT years back catalogue. Today I therefore played:

Wishbone Ash - New England.

This 1976 WA Mk 2 album was a strong return to form after the disappointing previous album Locked In. I remember the feeling of relief when I first heard New England when it came out. It's remained a favourite with a great mix of rockier and softer songs and instrumentals.

today
on 180g
double album - queens greatest hits vol 1
abbey rd - beatles
hot rocks - rolling stones ( also a double)
all sounding great

with my cut down hifi ( no passive preamp) i am finding i prefer listening to vinyl, over digital.
so i might be listening to more vinyl, especially after my tidal sub ends this month

This changed system has a little more drive, and directness
