Absolute steal..

Get 5 speakers (plus a sub if you have smallish speakers) for a super TV sound system. This has all the amps you need.

Yes it doesn't support some of the Blu-ray formats and super expensive streaming channels but if you watch DVDs or HD TV (so only Dolby Digital or DTS at best) then this is fantastic.

Integrates into a hi-fi system as well but you can play CDs through it from a Blu-ray player using optical cable connection(this is what my wife uses).

Unbeliveable timing. I bought an Onkyo AV receiver and Monitor Audio radius setup at the weekend. It sounds no where near as good as my cyrus stuff.

Wish I'd seen this ad before hand :(

... still tempted to buy it in addition

Now I am hesitating to sell it or not, I had thought of selling it to buy the
Sony STR-DN1080 and now I do not know what to do.
Would it be worth the change?

The sony has excellent reviews and is full of latest specs, dolby atmos, 4k support, etc. ok over twice the price of the aging av8 but far better if you have the money.
Oh yes, and i'd be interested in your av8 ;) you should have a pm

Depends on what your looking for or listening for...

I had a Sony STR DB 930 was looking for a good DAC at the time, it was supposed to sound good for music as well, this was 1999.

RRP 600 paid £400.

It broke down (<3 months) the shops repair people could not fix it (long time) so it was sent to Sony repair centre near Heathrow.

When fixed Sony wanted to charge me £20 to return it to me. I got them to return it to the shop for free, while the shop was only a few hundred metres from where I lived, it was no fun carrying it home as it's heavy.

Found out most of the screws that held the case on were missing. Contacted the repair centre and apparently it arrived like that; they said they would send some but it would take a few months - Japan.

Fortunately I got some a week later as the manager had found one in the skip and sent me the ones from that.

Now while straight £ is not the best definer of quality, its worth some thought.

AV8M £800 - 3 amps
C6P £500 - 2 amps

=£1300 for 5 amps
=£260 per amp

OR

(800+500) / (70 + (30*2) + (70*2)) = £4.4 per W

Str-dn1080

£600 for 7 amps
=£86 per amp

OR

£600 / (165W * 7) = £0.52 per W

This is very crude tho, as the Sony has a whole load more electronics as well: Radio (do wish they could have chucked a cheap one in with the AV8M), WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI (no video switching on the AV8M), USB, Chrome-Cast and much much more, so 52p per W is well over stated.

When I went from my STR-BD930 (using a Cyrus 2 for the centre) to the AV8M it was much better.

Very expensive tho as a new (pre loved) MA Gold centre speaker (with good cable) followed and two MA Sound Frame 2 (pre loved) rears. I've got some good cable for those once I've channelled my concrete floor.

Sound fab for Vid and doing 5.1 (pro logic II) music early VNV Nation can sound really heavy.

So it depends on what you want and are going to use.

I would say the AV8M+C6P will slaughter the Sony unless you wish to compare it something the AV8M cannot do.

I bought a second hand Arcam to replace my AV8M as it had HDMI inputs. To be honest it sounded great for films. SO much clout. However the settings in the memory got lost far too easily which was beyond the technical abilities of my wife so it was unusable for TV day to day.

My wife hated the size of the monster and the final straw was that it did not fit in the rack. Sold it for nearly what I paid for it and went back to my much loved Cyrus AV8M.
