Changes implemented Jan 2017

Postby Robert » Tue Jan 10, 2017 1:22 pm

Main change - migrated the data from smf 2.0 software to phpbb 3.0 software
Updated to phpbb 3.1
At the moment holding back on upgrading to phpbb 3.2 - waiting until that version settles into 3.2.1 etc
Data cull - removed threads older than 12 / 36 / 60 months depending on the board. All old data is kept in the "old" forum running on smf and still accessible on a "read only" basis.

Changes being considered:
converting to another forum software. have considered Discourse, and looked at nodeBB and Flarum.
At the moment, I am hesitant to change again. While the user interface for Discourse and nodeBB is favourable, I have my doubts about: the administration panel available, the breadth of "mods" available, plus consideration has to be made about moving from a "cpanel" type web hosting package to a cloud virtual server.

Current intention:
look at other hosting providers, and moving away from zen. Considering a move back to 34sp.com
Negatives: rdhworld.co.uk will go
Positives: rdhworld.co.uk can be resurrected and put to good use. Cant seem to get it to work on zen.
More control over domain names
Can introduce https
i think php version is higher
they are a hosting provider first and foremost

Well, that was easy.
rdhworld.co.uk is back up and running on 34sp.com
SSL "Let's encrypt" certificate set up and working so the whole site runs under https
A wordpress site I host backed up from zen and reinstalled at 34sp, all it took was a tweak to the config file and the site came up no issues.
So now I can do the same with cyrusunofficial!
i'm going to do a trial run, which then means assuming it goes smoothly, all i would need to do is backup/upload a fresh cut of the db.

How funny!
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=11300&p=141717
It must be a January / New Year thing?!
Jan 2010 I did this:
CU forum converted to mybb (6th Jan 2010)
- punbb database backed up and uploaded to new hosting server
- smf installed, and punbb to smf conversion run
- mybb installed, and smf to mybb conversion run
- CU forum reactivated same day, new software on new hosting server

and then before the end of 2010 I'd converted from mybb to smf (which I'd used only for staging apparently in 2010)
and almost to the day 2017 I convert again to different software and different hosting !?

Have spent some time fixing broken links, tidying up references to:
mzen.co.uk - remove / replace with .co.uk
smfcu - replace with phpBB3
other forums like diyaudio + audiocircle etc where the smf -> phpBB conversion has messed up the link
Some broken links remain - should only be a handful, and for the most part the link should get you to the correct site if not the specific thread.
Funny how old references to mybb and punbb remained!
