Connecting Speakers confirmation/question?

Postby Neil Ridiculous » Tue Oct 18, 2016 7:39 pm

I own a couple of Smartpower amplifiers which I have been using as mono blocks. I have been considering upgrading the speakers for a while now. I heard a few different makes and models, and like what I hear from the KEF LS50s.

What I did want to confirm though is how to connect them up to each Smartpower (Just to be 100% sure). I plan on getting single wire cable. The LS50s as with some other models don't have points for biwiring either.

Using the diagram below, would I be correct in saying that I should just use the two top and far end posts only on each unit for the likes of the LS50?

I'm confused to just what you are after?

Surely best would be to  continue as is, with the Smarties used as mono blocks.
Now looka here...

But I said I have spent more money than a millionaire!
Cause if I had kept all my money that I'd already spent,
I would've been a millionaire a looong time ago...

I still plan to use them as mono blocks. I currently use some bi wired cable, which would work exactly as the original diagram shows.

However I plan to use single cable instead when I upgrade speakers, and will still be using the two amps as mono blocks. Looking for confirmation on how to connect with single runs of cable only. I assume it is best to stick with the top posts.

So instead of using by wire you want to use single wire. Page 4 of the manual

Single channel mono speaker connections
Connect the left loudspeaker to the left SmartPower using the panel sockets marked M+ 1) (red speaker plug) and M- a (black speaker plug).
Repeat this procedure to connect the right channel speaker to the right channel SmartPower. Fig 4b shows a wiring schematic for a bi-wired system using mono amplifiers.

Hope this helps

Maybe that's why he's moving to single wire....

Fig 4B deserves a visual 'Golden Bull' award for complicating the simple.

It shouldnt matter which of the speaker sockets you use on your amps, top or bottom pair; internally they're just connected together. You probably dont need to change your speaker cables, jut leave one set dangling not used/connected. I assume you have 4 bananas amp end, and 4 bananas speaker end, 2 of which are for treble and 2 for bass. Just connect 2 only each end.

As th op mentions - KEF LS50's are not bi-wireable  they only have two posts.

This is how I was going to set it up. I had heard others say you must use the top sockets only, if not using biwire speaker cable. Just wanted to be sure on it.

I will also be upgrading to better speaker cable, otherwise I would have used the existing stuff.

Ended up getting a pair of KEF R500s instead. All set up and sounds pretty decent to me thus far. I've listened to various pieces of music for a few hours, and it is a very "sparkly" sound at the high end, though no sign at all of this being tiring. The bass control with these speakers is also much tighter and detailed to my ears. I was using Q Acoustics concept 40 before.

If you fancy a cheap next step up and are using two Smartpowers in mono, wait until a pair of APA7.5's come up for £500-600 a pair and sell your smartpowers. The net cost is next to nothing and they sound clearly better without the bigger cost of going to Mono-X.
