Amarra4

Postby MiniCoupeman » Sun Feb 05, 2017 4:46 pm

I'll keep this short. I use Amarra hi fi as my preferred iTunes playback software (tried and have others - Audioirvana for example) but prefer this. Downloaded the new Amarra4 and the sound is excellent. Indeed it showed me what could be achieved from 16/44. Now the bad news. The programme is so bug ridden I had to uninstall.
Now I am sitting here thinking 'there must be a CD player out there that does the same'
Note. Everything inc Amarra goes through Chord DAC. So I know what is possible - but can't get it!

Do you use an Apple i-something for playing iTunes through? I used to play digital through a Mac Mini with iTunes and Audioivarna (I found it quite tweakable and worked well with DDDAC). To get a bit more from it out into USB DAC I also bought an Uptone Regen device.

Then I got bored of the whole thing - iTunes is an inherently flawed music management library, and there are much better dedicated devices out there as digital music players. I'd take an Auralic Aries over a Mac any day for example, especially with the Linear PSU.

Hi
some years back , I managed my Library wih iTunes (mac mini )
It was a mess , and used audirvana at that time
Library backup was not so easy , especially with Wav files (no tags etc)
Then came J River , and the MM Streamer -- -CAPS -- CAPS Zuma ..with all tweaks
Guess what : I ended with Auralic Aries , and Melco

Amarra is good software , but I guess that you'll get fussed someday or the other
Computer hifi has taken a new route .. loads of servers / streamers out there ..
And at the end , computer audio offers the possibility for the lazies to get things easy ..
For the non lazy : CD is there again offering the best of the old world ..

Cheers

Melco is on the list (Forum members think the £1600 version is just a bit less than the £3300 version which is good to hear but - but I worry.) Apple based so not going JRiver route. Heard Auralic and impressed but it was through a TT and I am not sure what it could offer me - I don't stream. What my very brief listen to Amarra4 showed me is that I could get more from a file than I can do at present - and I don't buy into the 'it's in the filters' argument.' This was more info. (And thanks)

But can't you plug a HDD straight into the Aries? In which case the only real difference with a mac/ pc with whatever software, will be the sound quality which I'm pretty confident that the Aries will be better.

I can stream with my Aurender (I guess I do when I use Tidal), but I've also got 2tb of music on its internal drive which offers the best SQ, especially with well mastered hi res material. Aurender/ Melco etc take you to another level (ymmv) but you'll pay a premium for it.

Hello again
I agree totally with CD (we'll not agree about Aurender vs Lumin vs Melco may be) (LOL)
The Aries mini , is not that bad , there are loads of less expensive stuffs there
Why not try J RIver for mac ?

Seeing a friend this evening who owns an Auralic. Think it is borrowing time!

Why not Roon for the very best user experience?
Roon can import your iTunes library. And with a budget around £1600 the $500 lifetime subscription is not a problem.

Am reading this thread with interest as I'm looking into adding streaming using both my iTunes ALAC files currently stored on a MacBook Pro and also Tidal possibly using Roon.

Wayne, what is it that makes you an Auralic Aries (or other streamer / bridge) will yield better sound quality over a new MacBook with a SSD?

Thanks, and apologies to the OP for the slight detour.

Two things -
1. Better power isolation
2. Because iTunes is shit

Thanks.

Would a MacBook running on its internal battery not be adequate, or by power isolation do you include battery power as being as detrimental to sound interference as mains power?

I don't mind iTunes, but in any event I guess iTunes integration into Roon is a move from iTunes anyway?

Sorry, should have said 3 things. The third being experience of running Mac Mini and Macbooks against dedicated streaming alternatives which were always better, and not by a small margin.

I wouldn't have splashed out on an Aurender if I could get an Apple whatever to sound as good, and believe me I tried.

Thanks.

Aurender is outside my budget so I'll look at the Bluesound Node 2 and the two Auralic Aries options to see how golden my ears are at appreciating any cost / benefit differences.

I'd definitely look at the Aries and PSU.
