Amarra/ Melco (again)

Postby MiniCoupeman » Tue Mar 14, 2017 7:56 pm

I really hate Amarra 4. It has a wonderful sound, better than any other software solution. And a shit back end which makes, loading, arranging, and playing anything a real pain in the..,,,,
Anyone compared this to a Melco? (£1600 version).
I find it difficult to believe that the Melco is better but am almost prepared to throw money at it to overcoming the shortcomings of Amarra4. Help

Hello
It all depends on what you really want
The Melco is not easy to control , but it's a wonderful NAS for audio

Really? Not heard them all personally, but Roon sounds nice. There's probably more audio improvements from cleaner power supplies and better implementation in the output stage of dedicated streamers over a computer running different software. YMMV.

Hello
I have been through loads of stage of Computer Hifi , but don't have the experience of older (in posts) posters here
Nevertheless , I have had
1. MM Streamer wxith Asus Xonar ST card , with LPS (Still alive and working)
2. CAPS V2 with LPS (dead)
3. CAPS V3 Zuma with LPS (Still in my possesion)
4. Item audio T1 with HDplex LPS (Still here)
5. Auralic Aries with LPS
6. Auralic Mini , which belongs to a friend , but being tested with and without LPS
7. Melco N1A : acting as storage and player
8. Aurender N100H : recent
9. The network media renderer : being in the possession of Simon J for testing purposes

What do I conclude ?
Sound dépends on your pleasure and taste : and I won't comment that
BUT
There's one thing to note : Digital music is about essentially a good control app that brings the music without hassle
There's no point in having a tip top machine without the control app
Lumin in it's ealy days outcasted Linn , in the way they offered the app on IOS
The Melco is a fantastic player via USB , but there's no control app for IOS which is to the level of CONDUCTOR or J RIVER or LIGHTNING , there's Bubbleupnp for android
The Auralics very very easy to use ..
The Aurender is tremendous to use
The CAPS .. well easy if you have J River , sounds goood , but to expensive to build today

AND to complicate things , there's now ROON and TIDAL MQA to deal with LOL

We'll have a chat soon ..

PS : Wayne has a pretty good experience in this , I should say that he has a brilliant N100H

Cheers

Just picked this up. I agree control is important BUT my best sound - it grieves me to say this but better than vinyl at present - is via Amarra but it is worse than picking a Cd from a remote garage and loading it for play (having first set the peramiters) I have heard Auralic with a Chord TT and was very impressed but, perhaps wrongly, I put the improvement in my system down to the TT. Roon does not work for me, I think, because my hard disk is hard wired, not streamed and I have no interest in multi room stuff. (And please correct me if I have this wrong). Reviews of the Melco are all positive and it looks like a plug n play but Auralic? Could this be the answer? Appreciate (esp Mato73's) input.

Hello
@ Minicoupeman
Just sent you a text
To resume , Aries + Melco : very detailed and analytic : Roon capable if using a NAS (not tested wity Melco)
Aurender N100 H : Now pricey , and vinyl like sound , highly enjoyable
These 2 are far batter than the HD plx with Item transport with , hard drive and PPang card linear powered

For 1200 quids , the Melco is very very very good , the only problem being the control of it
Hifi news has reviewed the Melco as having the cleanest USB output
Cheers

For anyone still interested I have just finished a long thread on the Naim forum re Amarra (and others)?and Melco. Two (near) quotes.
"I ran Amarra Symphony with rooom correction from a mini mac. It was very good. The Melco N1A was still a big improvement".
"I didn't get what the Melco offered when my dealer told me about it. I laughed. I was wrong. Fantastic bit of kit"

There are other very positive comments. I will buy the Melco and report back.

I think I was me that originally said that it would be better to buy Aurender when you all bought Auralic Aries.
So here is another prediction for best user experience and SQ ;)

Roon 8)

The server is a dedicated i5 NUC with small SSD for ROCK OS running the RoonCore. Music files can be on internal HD, USB HD or NAS using stock PSU. No LPS or other isolation required or audio tweaks.

The point is that the isolation should be where it matters which is not on the server(NUC).
The important thing to isolate is the RoonBridge device which can be a RPI for better result a Sonore MicroRendu + Uptone LPS1 think $600+$400.
If you happen to have a Aries then that can also be used as a RoonBridge, but probably not better than the other combination.

The suggested Roon solution is a lot cheaper than the other suggestions and more future prof as Roon is continually adding value to their solution.

At least it is a direction to consider.
Personally I will get a DAC that is RoonReady and supports MQA.
Source: Synology NAS, Intel NUC Linux RoonServer, RPI RoonBridge
DAC: Chord Hugo
Pre amp: MFA Baby Ref.
Amps: 4xHypex nCore
Speakers: Dali Epicon 8
Cables: ML Cryo Ref. XLR, Yannis RCA, Analysis plus big silver oval
AV: Onkyo TX-NR818, 5.1  B&W M-1, PV1D sub
