DAC list

Postby angelface » Thu Apr 13, 2017 11:03 am

I found hifinut's list of preamps very helpful so I wonder if someone would do the same for DACs.

Well I'll start with my list

CD8x
CD8i
DACXP
DACXP+
Bel Canto DAC3VB
Bel Canto DAC3.7

Feel free to add Chord DACs and DDDAC to the list and of course disagree with my list!

I don't have that much experience of DAC changes, but the ones I've had have been major steps

Cyrus CD8SE
Cyrus DAC-XP+
Primare Pre 60 (the MM30 media board is the actual DAC)

I currently own 3 DACS:
Meridian Explorer (original)
Chord Mojo
Naim DAC V1

incredible to think that on a practical level, the Mojo and Naim dac offer identical functions
USB, coax, optical input (chord 768kHz/32-bit Capable Input on the USB, Naim USB input up to 24bit/384kHz or dsd128, but in reality 99.9% of my flacs are "just" cd quality 16/44, and a smattering of albums up to 24/192)
fixed or variable line out
headphone amp
but only one of them fits nicely in your pocket!
home office: Dell laptop running JRriver MC22 / Meridian Explorer / AKG 550's
music room: PC transport running JRiver MC22 / Naim DAC-V1 / Naim Nait XS / Neat Motive SX2
kitchen: Naim Unitiqute 2 / Naim NAP100 / Totem Dreamcatchers

Hello
I'll start with the beginning .. start of cyrus adventure
1. Matrix DAC .. back in 2008
2. DAC XP (loved it in the 2009's .. but prefered the BC DAC 3)
3. BMC Dac (I still own in a box , tremendous value for money)
4. Bel Canto DAC 3 (Still here)
5. Eastern electric DAC modded (great piece of kit)
6. Wyred 4 sound DAC 1 : not my cup of tea
7. Eximus DP 1 : still here and serving
8. DDDAC made by Doede himself : great value for money , great sound
9. Chord Hugo : returned to Kipper as part exchange
10. BC DAC 3.7 with LNS .. (should be arriving soon)
10. Chord DAVE .. the last one .. and the best I have ever heard in my system

That's it .. there won't be more

A couple of years back I counted the number of different 'manufacturers' (some are probably rebadged) of DACs and I got past 40 before I gave up.

To me this is a BAD thing, as it means the market will be spread very thin, and prices may have to be higher to make any profit.

Cyrus 8xpdQX
DAC xp
berisford - a side project
benchmark Dac 1 - I still preferred the dac xp
bel canto 2.5 ( just a month) - I still preferred the dac xp
audiolab m-dac( and mcru psu)
Cyrus dac x signature - fuller than Mdac, but I preferd Mdac
oppo ha1-se
Though there are many brands of dac most use the same 2 or 3 chipsets don't they. But the character of the oppo is nothing like the m-dac, even though they have the same chipset

The best DACs not your history

Postby angelface » Fri Apr 14, 2017 10:14 am

I was hoping you would list them in sound quality order not just as a history.

Myself I have never used a DAC other than for listening to CDs so USB or DSD is not an issue for me.

OK maro as the person with the biggest list which was the second best (Chord Dave being top I presume)?

I would hope working in history correlates into sound quality, unless you downgrading I suppose.

dacs i used to own:
hrt music streamer II - my first venture into PC streaming via USB -> amp, and very successful it was too
hrt music streamer II+ - an upgrade on the II
hrt music streamer HD - each one better than the previous. this was clearly better than the II/II+ models
Naim DAC V1 - my final DAC upgrade; I cant imagine needing more, this one for me is perfect, slots nicely into my Naim system, and the firmware upgrade from a year ago (or whenever it was) improved on the sound plus added native DSD128 support (not that I need it). I use this for PC streaming via USB and also via coax from my Sony cd player used as a transport. Nice :)

I have never compared, nor do I really want to, my Naim or Meridian Explorer or Chord. They each serve different uses for me; Naim is in my main hifi, the Meridian is attached to my laptop at home, the Mojo is in my work bag and gets used with my ipad.

All my DACS have been built into pre or streamer, but of those I've listened to, in order of sound quality:

1. Cyrus DACXP Sig
2. Cyrus DACXP+
3. Naim DAC
4. Audiolab MDAC
5. MF (can't remember the model)
6. Cambridge NP30

In truth though, there wasn't a huge difference between them, and I still use my old NP30 in the spare room

Hello Angelface
Difficult to rate them for many reasons .
1. Our listening experience changes with time , maturity or imaturity I don't know
2. The prices vary so much
3. Our systems changed
4. Technology changed

However , I do know that the Sabre chips are not my cup tea
2 DACS have blown away all expectations : the DDDAC , and the Chord DAVE
If I had to choose a USB dac : I would go for the DDDAC , for the price vs quality , and there's everything in it
The Chord DAVE is pretty in another planet , and delivers a natural and soundstageful sound

Cheers

So....
Started with:
PreXPD - not a great DAC, still like the Preamp stage.
Wyred 4 Sound 2. Great DAC, especially for the price.
DAC XP+. Smoother than the W4S2.
DAC XP Signature. Lovely DAC.
T + A DAC 8 DSD. Current and best DAC. Lovely precise sound, but not cold. DSD stage is fantastic.

I think this may be why my wife thinks I'm crazy!
Roon + HQPlayer (/ Cyrus CD6SE) -> T+A DAC DSD -> Cyrus Mono x200 Signatures -> Audiovector Si3 Avantgarde Arretés

Here we go...

Arcam RLINK ( good entry point dac, no usb)
Audiolab M-DAC (excellent features and value for money)
Cyrus xp signature
Benchmark 1 pre
Benchmark DAC2D (very good dac and headphone amp)
Audio-quest dragonfly 1.2v
Chord hugo (amazing as a dac and headphone amp)
Chord mojo (still own for travel & bedroom system, not far off the hugo 1 yet a 1/4 of the price, major performance for the money)
Chord dave (still own and can't see me needing anything else for a good while)
