Which speakers on Cyrus pre/power

Postby Anna » Mon Aug 07, 2017 8:17 pm

Hi,

I have Cyrus ACA7.5 and X-Power combo and I have recently sold my speakers (B&W N804). I have now few options to go for. I can choose between Proac D18 (£1.300), Monitor Audio GR60 (£1.100) and Spendor A6r (£900).

Which pair would best suit Cyrus gear? And which is best option in terms of price/performance in this particular case?

I sold B&W as I felt I need a stronger bass.

Thank you so much for your replies.

Your amplifier will drive all of them ( but I think the Spender' a little less easily) but all three speakers have different characteristics and you are really taking a punt in the dark if you can't listen first.

Which of them are the most similar to B&W CM series? I heard them once on a different setup and quite liked them.

Spendor A6r for £900 - must be a typo (?) or is that each ;)

I've found it incredibly difficult to select speakers and really the only way is to audition them - ideally in your listening room but failing that on the same equipment in a shop. Relying on other people's advice on sound is really tricky even if you know them personally and know what they like. Maybe your best option is to by used if you can't audition - that way if you don't like them you can probably sell and buy alternatives without losing major amounts of cash.

Also not entirely sure what you are wanting from Bass response - what type of music do you listen to?

The prices I stated are all for used items.

I am listening mostly rock and some Vocals like Josephine Gronholm or Eliza Gilkyson.

Quite simple - buy the A6r's and if you don't like them sell them on for double what you paid ;)

Well yes - would have to agree with Jules - if they really are £900 then out of your choices they seem most likely to fit what you are looking for so worth a try - just not sure if the X-power will get the best from them but it sounds like you have nothing to lose

don't take any notice of our recomendations because speakers are very personal choice
i ve heard d18s driven by x power, it didn't sound special, but that might because they need more power

the spendors have a sound some love, but others hate - a dealer near you can probably do an x power/spendors demo - that could give you a taste.
Even if you can't get specific demos try and hear different speakers with your xpower, to give you a point of reference

if you'd asked before selling your b and w speakers i'd probably have said get another xpower instead of new speakers
on the face of it the A6r is a bargain

Thanks,

obviously I can't lose much if I go for Spendors. If I don't like them you'll be the first to know. :-)

I don't think that you will get stronger bass than N804 with any of those speakers IMHO.

You probably need to upgrade your power amp for that (another X power or a pair of Mono X).

.... I was actually being a bit flippant in my remark. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to purchase a pair of Spendor A6r for £900... hence my wink on the post. These retail new for around £2.8k so 2nd hand you'd be looking at say £1800 to £2000 I'd think.

If you want 'stronger' bass than B&W 804 - that is 'more' bass - I'd say look in the Dynaudio direction
If you want 'stronger' in terms of a more accurate bass, then the Spendor may work for you... if you can buy them for £900...
