A Grand Day Out

Postby Czechchris » Mon Sep 11, 2017 8:54 pm

Following up on a link suggested by hifinutt of this parish, My wife and I booked tickets for a hifi demo by Oxford HiFi Consultants. Tickets were free and there was an opportunity to hear some real high-end electronics.
So a day return to Oxford and lunch in a local hostelry.

The demo was held in a hall belnging to the Faculty of Music and is used for lieder recitals etc.

First up was:
Support rack: Quadraspire x REFERENCE
Cables: Chord The Music interconnects, speaker cable and mains leads.
Source: Aurender W20 music server; dcs Vivaldi 2.0 dac, 2.0 upsampler, 2.0 clock.
Amplification: T+A preamp P3000HV, power amp A3000Hv, power supply PS3000HV.
Speakers: Sonus Faber Amati Tradition.

And a performance from hires files of Elgar Cello Concerto - du Pré. Side 1 of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.

A lot of electronics and a very high price, but what impressed me the most was the soundstaging especially on the jazz. I really felt like I was at a concert. Bass was somewhat thin, though and ultimately disappointing.

After a half-hour break to change things we had...
Second System:
Same rack and cables.
Source: Chord Blu mkII transport; DAVE reference dac.
Amplifiers: Chord preamp CPA5000, mono power amps 2x SPM1400
Speakers: Wilson Audio Sasha series-2.

Music played this time was cd, David Bowie - Blackstar.

This system sounded superb, but I would have preferred different music as I cannot abide this album. The speakers were wonderful.

I had a chat with the Chord rep about the upsampling on DAVE, and left just as wise as I started!

Again a half-hour break and then
Third System:
Again the same support rack and cables.
Source: Pro-Ject Signature 10 tt with 10 inch unipivot tonearm, Ortofon MC Windfeld Ti cartridge, Ortofon ST-80Se stepup transformer,
Amplifier: phono stage: Unison Research Phono One, pre-amp Audio Research REF6.
Active Speakers: ATC SCM100A with integrated power amps.

Music this time, the Giles Martin remix of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper.
Wonderful.

The AR amp was set at a volume of 35 and it filled the hall beautifully and sounded great, but on request A Day In The Life was reprised with the volume raised to 45, and those speakers really SANG!

All these systems well beyond reach, of course, but a lovely day out.

And I even won a prize in the free prize draw! Astell & Kern Jr portable music player! Brilliant.

Thanks Chris, sounds like you had a good day out.

I've always fancied hearing the ATC actives and the Ortofon Winfeld cartridge. Beyond me too though.

Now that does sound like a grand day out. I can't ever imagine persuading my wife to go to a hifi demo though, so well done that man!

Interesting that the dCS, T&A, Sonus Faber combo sounded weak on bass. Hard to believe at the cost of equipment like that, that they can have any significant weaknesses. I wonder where the issue lay, a particular component, or poor synergy... Did you have a chance to get any feedback on this?

It might be because Chris has some monster speakers at home..

Hello
Sounds really fantastic
The chord blu mk2 is fantastic , but it lacks the SACD play back
To be honest , I did not understand the upsampling stuff
I had a chat with the guys from oxford on the phone , they seem really nice
Cheers
