Considering moving away from Cyrus system..

Postby eddym » Tue Sep 26, 2017 6:47 am

Hi,

Just after a bit of opinion from anyone who has had experience with the kit I'm considering..

Currently I have a Cyrus system:
Dac xp+ with psxr 2,
2 x aPA7.5
Cdxt sig
And Well tempered simplex (with dynavector DV20-X2 cartridge)
Tom Evans micro grove+ mk2 phono stage.

I really enjoy the system and it is all plumbed in nicely and working well.

I have been considering getting a Rotel Michi active pre and power set up, obviously I would need to get an external Dac.

I realise that this would be a totally different system, but to anyone who has used both, how do they compare? I like the small footprint of the Cyrus kit but could make the michi fit, would the Michi power be a lot better than the aPAs, and the Michi pre against the dac xp+?

My other consideration is to stay Cyrus and get a Dac xp sig..

Any thoughts on combinations of this kit?

Thanks!

I certainly would not upgrade to a DACXPSig as first priority in your position.
I did that upgrade and the improvement was not very significant.

My opinion is that you'd get better VFM by improving the power amp e.g. with an upgrade.

As for the Rotels, I'm not a big fan of 'legacy' gear and good though they were at the time I can't help thinking that more modern designs would be better.

I would consider changing the DACXP+ ( I had one) but upgrade price to Sig was too high so ended up switching to Bel Canto as s/h price is attractive.

Not heard Michi but can't imagine sounding better than Cyrus power.

if it sounds nice, why not stick with it?

sig dac xp can be had for £1500 now, so price is much lower.

x300 and x200 amps are now available more cheaply than you might think

you don't say what speakers you are using?

i'm sure you can get a system which you think sounds better, but the advantage of staying with cyrus is that you will be just getting a better version of what you already like, and won't involve demoing and matching different electronics

Is there a dealer near you that can offer a home demo of either better power amps or a sig XP?

demoing a cheap external dac, or passive preece might also give you an idea of where you can improve

As Callen24 mentioned, you haven't said what speakers you are using.

I would suggest that the speakers or the amps are due an upgrade; the ROTEL would be a sideways and slightly downwards step in my opinion. I have had old ROTEL mono-Blocs before and they are OK, but so far away from modern amps, they did not have the grunt or stamina of subsequent Cyrus monos. I even though my old Cyrus 2 integrated sounded better.

Depending on what your speakers are, I would be looking at some new CYRUS mono's, X200 minimum, they would certainly give your system a lift.

Hi,
Thanks for the comments! Indeed, I could just stick with what I've got..

The mentioned Bel Canto is interesting though, but I don't know anything at all about their stuff so I'll have to research from scratch. Also, DacXPsig are a bit cheaper now, but as has been mentioned, I did wonder how much of an upgrade it would really be?! Long term reliability was also a consideration having previously read of issues developing with some of the Dacxps..

Thanks for the link to the Mono200sigs! I have previously considered Nord too..

I have Ruark Tallisman 2 speakers which I do really like, although I realise they are not necessarily the last speaker I will ever own.

It was my understanding that the Michi series kit was vastly superior to the other Rotel offerings hence considering, thanks for your input :)

Nord amps are tremendous value for money, certainly compared to Cyrus power amps.
Depending on system components.

2 things

1]if the kit sounds good and you enjoy it , what is the point of changing it ? you will spend the next 2 years vexating over it

2] is the michi not a passive pre amp ?

if i was to change anything in your system i would get some better power amps
modwright 36.5 dual mono
msb s200 power amp
bel canto 3.5vbs/vbs1 FM1 tuner
onkyo sacd /Marantz sacd, sigmas conditioning
proac studio 125, cabling
rfc /chord epic //Townshend /acoustic zen

Yeah I am certainly open to the possibility that I leave it all alone!

I believe the Michi had an active or a passive option. The setup available to me is the active version..

so , you are thinking a 1990 `s rotel pre amp might be an improvement on what you have ? i doubt it very much
have you heard one ?

there are so many amazing pre amps to try , the mfa copper passive in the classifieds will knock the socks off many pre amps , and then a modwright 36.5 has just come up at 2k . there is so much choice

I believe that was in "Reviews" and not "Private". However, it is sometimes difficult to keep up with Phil's level of churn so you never know...

Thanks for the speaker suggestion!

I will be looking into that at some point down the line.. I have been researching different preamps such as those mentioned above, I also ended up re-visiting something I had considered previously but never followed up on; a Devialet D200, a friend has one that he is going to bring around for a listening session. I am interested to hear it as a completely different take on things. I wouldn't be using the Air aspect..

Hifinutt, you mention a modwright 36.5 at 2k, do you mean the 9.0 anniversary?

Thanks again for the feedback!
