In need of a new DAC

Postby caine » Wed Feb 21, 2018 2:25 pm

After considering my options with the Streaming thread I've come to the conclusion that I need a new dac then I can sort everything out from there.

DAC's that seem worthy for many of the same reasons as well differing;

MYTEK Manhattan II
TAD DA1000
AYRE QX-5 Twenty
MSB Discrete DAC
PS DirectStream DAC

The only DAC out of these that I have heard is the TAD DA1000 which is stunning. Anyone got experience of the others or can think of equally talented dac's.

p.s. Not interested in NAIM, or CHORD.

I assume you want MQA for Tidal streaming.

I heard PS-Audio DAC and Transport a few years ago with Focal Utopias at a show in Paris and I was impressed by the sound. Of course it was a show and I was not comparing with other DACs!

Im a Fan of Benchmark
Have a DAC1 and DAC2 and both are superb. They are both better described as a DAC /Pre with one or two analoge inputs. Balanced or unbalanced output with user adjustable attenuators to match any amp. The usual USB,Optical and SPDIF. Full tech info and data are supplied as standard. They are very helpfull on any technical issue.
The current model is the DAC3

Thanks Ian, I have over the years heard different examples of the Benchmark DACs and did have one for a home demo a number of years ago. Good dac, though always preferred the sound of Bel Canto / Esoteric / dCS too the BM's. I'm not in a huge rush unless a bloody good deal comes along. Got my eyes on a couple at the moment.

That said I am reading the Stereophile Review of the DAC3 HGC.

Another too add into the mix is a 2nd hand Esoteric K-01X which would replace DAC3.5VB mk2, CD2, modded VBS1. Offering one of the best disc spinners in the world via the VRDS-NEO drive system and bang up to date dac all in one case.

Both the Mytek Manhattan II and the Ayre Twenty QX-5 use the ESS Sabre 9038PRO chip, the Benchmark uses the 9028PRO chip. Esoteric is another kettle of fish, and obviously MSB use ladder dac's.

The BM DAC 3DX ticks all the boxes for functionally.

Will try before I buy. Doubt I will have much chance with the Mytek; but will head to Bristol and Munich in May for the Hi-End to get a listen.

I’d throw in any Hugo.
No MQA and maybe a size issue.

I’d give the Auralic Vega G2 a try. I really rate my original Vega and the new one is supposedly a big step up performance wise whilst also having an inbuilt passive pre and the ability to act as a Roon end point, should you wish. The switchable digital filters also provide an opportunity to tailor the sound to your personal tastes a bit.

Elite Audio in Fife are Mytek dealers. They'll do a home demo if you've shortlisted it.

The Wyred4Sound dac2v2 uses the ESS Sabre 9028 and the SE version the 9038.
I am very happy indeed with my dac2v2 (also from Elite Audio).
I use J River and have used the usb input on the dac for everything up to dsd256. It's really good and I think worthy of audition too.

If you get near Heathrow, pop in for a listen.

Thanks for the suggestions.

At the moment got me local dealer trying to get a home demo of the Auralic Vega G2 and the Ayre QX-5 Twenty.

Big jump in Wyred4Sounds pricing. Mytek is on the shortlist now you've mentioned about Elite Audio. Need to get these dacs onto my system and start listening to their sound.

My W4S dac2v2 is £2299 new. Worth a compare with Mytek? Dave at Elite could possibly lend you both for home dem.

I’ve heard the Vega a couple of times but only briefly and at the time was not in the market for a dac. Awaiting a demo. Hopefully going to make it to the Bristol Show Sunday; assuming I’m not to trashed from the rugby on Saturday
