Oops, all gone,Goodbye Cyrus

Postby clive197 » Sun Jun 10, 2018 9:17 am

I have pulled the trigger, selling 5 Cyrus boxes ( 2 x X300 Sig, DACXP Sig, CDXt & PSX-R), leaving me with a Phono Sig & PSX-R2, & StreamX Sig. So what am I replacing those with?
I have now ordered a Bryston BP17-3 & 4B3, both in the better sounding black.
For DAC duties I’ve installed a Chord Qutest.
Am I excited, oh heck Yes.

PS: Phono Signature, PSX-R2 & StreamX Signature now gone. Replaced with Auralic Aries G1 and Whest Two.2 Phono-stage.

So it really is farewell.

I may still visit here occasionally, but in the meantime, enjoy your Cyrus and may your gods go with you.

Another convert to Bryston.
That's the way I will probably go if I ever get the courage to spend that much money !
It would be good to hear what you think of the new kit when you've bedded it in.

The chord will be a revelation.
I’d not swap my Hugo TT. Same dac just a few extra caps.

Mono x300 gone this week too, replaced with a Perreaux 255i.
Two boxes and two pre boxes (psu and pre) into one...

I think it’s all a bit of a load of tosh.
Box swappers, expectation bias, current fanboys...

I ended up swapping for power and a good deal. Almost too good a deal that I was initially suspicious...

It is interesting to note, and this was partly why I changed to Bryston, is that a Bryston 4B3 stereo power amp costs less than a pair of Cyrus X300 Signatures.

It all depends on what sound you’re looking for. Bryston are on the Hi-Fi accuracy end of the scale, I’m increasingly sliding towards the forgiving, coloured side. Looking at speakers again, starting with Dali.
Michell Gyro Dec, SME IV, Ortofon Cadenza Black, Project Phono Box RS + Power Box.
Aurender N100H, Chord Hugo TT.
Luxman L-590AX II, Dali Epicon 6.

Well the new kit is now installed and I have been burning it all in for the last 48 hrs. It’s already showing it’s potential with only a hint of splash to the top registers. The bass even out of the box sank to depths I’ve never heard in my lounge. I reckon that by Sunday night it will be ready for some very serious listening.

Simple. Money well spent. Both the amp and dac have made significant gains in overall SQ but along with far more musicality in the Bass I’ve noticed a significant decrease in grain. I’m hearing on some albums that I’m very used to far more insight and detail which the Cyrus amp seems to have let escape.

What is a little surprising is the price (new) of the 4 box Cyrus and the 2 box Bryston are very similar.
